Council Objectives
Review strategic planning documents and reports from various units and recommend how planning efforts can be coordinated.
The academic planning process that has grown out of Charting
the Future will identify fundamental mission-critical priorities. Numerous other plans—such as those for athletics, enrollment management, facilities and strategic marketing—must be coordinated with academic planning efforts. The council will also recommend how to integrate future planning efforts.
Review fiscal and physical realities of the university to inform council recommendations.
In order to articulate recommendations within the parameters of fiscal realities and set reasonable target dates for completion, the council will devote some of its efforts to reviewing the university’s fiscal and physical realities. Realistic timelines and investment strategies will provide the foundation for continual strategic planning.
Recommend long-range strategies for investing in priorities.
The overarching goal of the President’s Planning Council and all other university planning efforts is to realign budgets with mission-critical priorities. The council’s outlook on planning will be much broader than the annual budget process.
Communicate the university’s strategic planning efforts.
Timely and clear communication that addresses “Why?” (strategic direction) is essential to maximize limited resources and excel in mission-critical areas. The council will make recommendations to the following groups and others on how strategic direction can consistently be communicated: University Advancement, Campus Community, UNC Foundation, Office of Budget and Institutional Analysis, Enrollment Management.
Advice and Assessment
The council will prepare an annual report advising the president on coordination of planning priorities. It will also review the annual budget proposal for consistency with strategic priorities and recommend how the university can assess progress toward investing in priorities.
