INTRODUCTION
The University of Northern Colorado is committed to making its campus a reasonably safe, secure environment in which; security is balanced with freedom of movement, individual rights are balanced with community needs, and the pursuit of learning, teaching, and research can take place. Many positive steps have been taken to reach that objective, such as: locating highly visible emergency telephones throughout campus, upgrading lighting along our sidewalks and in our parking lots, and increasing safety and crime reduction programs for students. In addition, the University has a well-publicized Drug/Alcohol policy and Student Code of Conduct that is vigorously enforced. It is believed that the campus is conservative, quiet, and reasonably safe. However, one should not be misled into thinking that the campus is crime-free. The University is a community with a number of people from different backgrounds, much like any other "city". The University’s campus is also open and the possibility of a criminal act occurring against a member of the University community despite the best efforts of the Police and Administrative Staff, will always exist. For this reason the University continually strives to upgrade campus physical security, to improve crime reduction programs, and to provide proactive policing. It is imperative however, that students and employees also accept responsibility for their own security and the security of others. We encourage everyone to report criminal actions, emergencies or suspicious activity immediately to the University Police. The University has reported its crime statistics to the FBI through the Uniform Crime Reports for many years. This reporting is used to identify problem areas and develop plans to address those problems. The data contained in this statement are published because the University feels it is vital for prospective students or present members of the University community to be able to make informed decisions about their personal safety. These data are also used to identify areas in which individuals need to take extra precautions to protect their property. Additional questions regarding crime statistics or campus safety may be directed to the University Police in Gray Hall.
