Schopenhauer
Encyclopedia Articles
Schopenhauer, 1815 |
- “Schopenhauer”—the Wikipedia article on Schopenhauer. Not a bad introduction, but philosophically unsophisticated and weak on the details of Schopenhauer’s thought, especially on his conception of the will. Still, you may find this article a useful place to begin.
- “Arthur Schopenhauer”—a general article by Robert Wicks in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Perhaps this article is a bit harder going than the Wikipedia article, but it is definitely more rewarding in the end.

Nietzsche
Encyclopedia Articles
Nietzsche, 1864 |
- “Friedrich Nietzsche”—a general article by Robert Wicks in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. This is a very nice companion piece to Wicks’s SEP article on Schopenhauer. Like that article, this one is well worth reading.
- “Nietzsche”—the Wikipedia article on Nietzsche. A good general introduction that combines a reasonably full biographical sketch with a general discussion of Nietzsche's thought and brief characterizations of all of his major works. Links to other related Wikipedia articles (themselves not all as good as this one) abound.
- “Nietzsche’s Moral and Political Philosophy”—an article by Brian Leiter in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. A challenging, thought-provoking piece. This is an article you shouldn’t miss.
