Hoover; originally published in the Midwest Journal of Political Science, Vol. 10, No. 2 (May, 1966), pp. 232-240—another very good piece: not as insightful as the O’Connor piece in identifying Ortega’s philosophical filiation, but excellent, so far as it goes, on the “significance of circumstance in individual life.” Available through JSTOR.

   Online Encyclopedias

• The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
  • The IEP’s article on Descartes
  • The IEP’s article Solipsism and the Problem of Other Minds
• The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
  • The SEP has no general article on Descartes yet, but a glance at the Descartes entry in the table of contents reveals articles on a number of specific topics such as, for example, a nice article on Descartes’s physics
  • The SEP’s article on the Problem of Other Minds
• The Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy—requires a subscription, but has some sample articles, such as its article on Descartes. The library has a copy of the print edition.

   Print Encyclopedias

• The Encyclopedia of Philosophy—print encyclopedia in eight volumes, Paul Edwards, editor in chief, published by Macmillian in 1967. The library has this as well.
• The Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy—print encyclopedia in ten volumes, Edward Craig, ed., pubished by Routledge in 1998. The library has a copy of the print edition.
• The Shorter Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy—a one-volume compendium. Quite useful and not terribly expensive.

   Dictionaries

• The Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy—available for under $25 at amazon.com. Might be available for even less elsewhere. The library has at least one copy.
