What is Spam Email?

What is Spam email?

Spam refers to electronic junk mail or junk newsgroup postings or more generally as any unwanted, unsolicited email.

It may include such content as pornography, commercial advertising, or get-rich-quick schemes.

Everyone who has an email address accessible to the internet is susceptible to spam. There are many ways for malicious people to obtain the email addresses of others and it is difficult to know how our email addresses are obtained and then targeted.

How does UNC's IT department help reduce Spam in my inbox?
UNC has taken several steps to reduce spam. UNC provides an email gateway Spam filtering services for all @unco.edu provided email accounts that eliminates over 95% of incoming Spam mail. This happens before your email is delivered to you so you do not have to spend countless hours sorting through junk mail.

How do I report email Spam that made it to my inbox?

You can report spam that may have been missed by the email filtering service by forwarding suspect email to: missed.spam@unco.edu. This will help improve filtering and reduce spam in your inbox.
