Barracuda Frequently Asked Questions

What is It?
Barracuda is a stand-alone, real-time spam detection appliance designed to combat the drain on staff resources caused by the harmful proliferation of unsolicited bulk email (also known as spam or junk mail).  More Details

How does It work?
Barracuda uses a local Enterprise Gateway. The Gateway filters out known spam messages at the organization’s entry point, before distributing mail to recipients.

No single analytic technique is enough to stop the constantly morphing forms of spam. Even multiple techniques aren’t enough to keep spam at bay for long. And rigid scoring often ends up blocking email that you actually want to receive. Barracuda takes spam management beyond arbitrary scoring with Barracuda, a revolutionary evidence evaluation system that identifies the sender, analyzes the content, and applies a collaborative review to every email. These methods are 98 percent effective at stopping spam. Only when all three elements are simultaneously cross-analyzed can you have true confidence in your solution’s handling of your company’s email.

Sender, content, and collaborative review are each excellent spam identifiers. But if only a single method is used, the risk of false positives increases.  However, Barracuda unique cross-analysis requires that at least two of our independent techniques label a message as spam before it is marked as definite spam – ensuring no good email is caught.

Will it affect my email?
Yes and No.  All incoming mail is screened according to the rules of the Barracuda device and by the rules that you create.  Most non-SPAM messages will go directly to your Inbox folder, just as they did before Barracuda was implemented.  You will be informed of messages that are suspected as being SPAM by a Spam Quarantine Summary email delivered to your inbox allowing you to manage these emails. Messages that are confirmed as SPAM either by the device or by rules that you have created are stopped before they ever reach your computer.

How do I get Barracuda?
There is no install or client needed.  Clients can access and manage their Junk Boxes either via the Spam Quarantine Summary emailed to them, or directly though the web based login to the Barracuda appliance.

Will I be charged for Barracuda?
No.  The Information Technology department has received funding to cover the license cost for you.

What are the requirements for Barracuda?
You need to have an Exchange (email) account or a student Bearmail account.

Can I use Barracuda on my Mac?
Yes.

How will I know if Barracuda is working?
We have configured the service to send an email message with the subject of “Daily Spam Quarantine Summary” to each user once daily.  Note that you will only receive this email if Barracuda has blocked junk email, which is usually everyday.

How do I setup rules to filters email in Barracuda?
There is no need for any rule or configuration setup,  corporate defaults set up by IT are usually adequate and recommended.  Users can block or allow specific senders, or delegate someone to control it for you.   More Details
