ResNet is a direct connection to the UNC fiber backbone that provides high-speed data communication in the UNC Residence Halls to the Internet.

ResNet is available in all residence halls.

ResNet includes the actual network connection (provided at the jack).

MacIntosh Power PC or higherIBM compatible pentium

Compare your computer with the UNC ResNet minimum system requirements.

ResNet is billed through your room and board charges, there are no additional charges for connecting*

*A variety of network cards and cables are available from our Bear Logic computer store.

If you have problems with your ResNet connection, please call the Technical Support Center at 351-4357 (Help).

What are the benefits of ResNet?

The main benefit of ResNet is your connection speed.  The ResNet connection is approximately 200 times faster than a modem connection.  It does not require the phone line to connect so you can be using the phone and your computer at the same time.   Unlike a modem line, you will not lose connectivity because your network connection will not time out or drop connections.  Once your connection is established, you can be on-line when ever your computer is on.

Yes.  Each year you need to activate your ResNet Service.

After completing our on-line ResNet Application, your will be automatically connected.

Yes.  You both will need to request ResNet Service.

Yes. However, if you use a different computer, your computer will need to be registered with a different IP address.

Yes. However,  each computer will require an IP address from our DHCP server and you will be charged the monthly ResNet fee for each computer.

Yes.  We have established a UNC Computer, Internet (Web) and Electronic Communications Procedure.

No.  There is no guarantee that a computer will work with ResNet.  The minimum requirements are specified and have been tested on a number of machines but there is no guarantee that all machines will connect.

Following are the steps you need to take for your connection to work:

  1. Check system requirements for the minimumsInstall an ethernet network cardConfigure your system as identified in the " How do I get Started?"
  2. Obtain an ethernet cable to connect your computer to the jack in your residence hall.
  3. Complete the on-line ResNet Application at http://resnet.unco.edu
You can only complete this process in your Residence Hall room.

First, make sure you have followed ALL steps identified in the section "What exactly happens when I sign up?

If all steps have been followed, call the Technical Support Center at 351-4357 and they will trouble shoot to determine what needs to happen to solve the problem.

Bear Logic computer store will install your network card for you as long as it is identified on the system minimum requirements list.  If your card is not listed, you will need to have your computer serviced elsewhere.

Bear Logic computer store has a variety of systems which can be purchased ResNet ready.

The connection end for the ResNet cable will not fit in the telephone jack.  This cable also has 8 connection wires in the end of the cable that can be seen through the plastic connector.  Additionally, the telephone jack has only one "port" where the ResNet jack should have at least 2 ports.

You will simply need plug into the ResNet jack in your new room.  Since you have already signed up for ResNet, there are no additional steps that you need to take.

You will need to select the option to cancel your service at our ResNet site. This process needs to be completed on your computer in the Residence Hall.  If you have left the Residence Halls, call the Technical Support Center at 351-4357 so this process can be handled manually for you.
