FAQ

Facilities Management is competitive with most private contractors. If you feel outside contractors will give you a lower cost, or if the situation is one we are not equipped or trained to handle, you may request to have the work bid out. If so, please specify this interest on the Service Request, and Facilities Management will handle the details. All such work will be awarded to the lowest responsible bid if it is within 10 percent of the Facilities Management estimate and meets University standards and specifications.

What services are not covered by the Service Request Form?

Key requests, vehicle requests, and facility reservations, major renovations (projects). Information on these services is discussed in the Facilities Management Handbook. Please call the Service Center for more information

What determines work priorities?

Emergency and D.I.N. (do it now) services take top priority as they are received. Every effort is made to provide routine services within the needs of the requesting department. If time is important, please indicate so on the service request, or to the Service Center in what ever means of communication you use. Try to be specific with the information you provide.

How are complaints handled?

Complaints should be directed to the Service Center at 351-2446. If they cannot be handled there immediately, they will be referred to the proper person. Please do not hesitate to question a charge to your account. We welcome the opportunity to either correct or justify the charge. The same is true for other types of complaints; good communication helps us to meet our customer needs.

My office needs additional electrical outlets!

Often a department over utilizes existing building utilities, i.e. available electric service, requiring the installation of additional service. This is considered an improvement to the facility and becomes the financial responsibility of the requesting department. A Service Request detailing your needs should be sent to the Service Center.

My flat panel monitor / laptop screen needs to be cleaned; what should I use?

Hey, glad you asked! Here's what we know:

What does LCD stand for?

Liquid Crystal Display, mostly used in flat screen monitors and laptop screens.

Why should I worry about cleaning my LCD screen?

One of the most expensive components of a computer system or laptop (especially a laptop!) is the LCD monitor or screen. LCD screens are easily susceptible to damage and scratches, so it's a good idea to make sure you clean it correctly.

Can I use any type of cleaning solution on my LCD screen?

No! Using alcohol or ammonia - based cleaners repeatedly may cause permanent damage to the LCD. Over time using these types of cleaners could cause the surface of the screen to yellow. It can also make the screen brittle and eventually cause cracking on the screen surface.

NOTICE: The following cleaners are NOT acceptable:

  • Acetone
  • Ethyl alcohol
  • Ethyl acid
  • Ammonia
  • Methyl chloride

What types of cleaners are acceptable?

  • Water (this, along with a soft cloth, is the best option!)
  • Vinegar (mixed with water)
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Petroleum Benzene

What are some of the basic supplies needed to clean an LCD screen?

  • It is important to use a soft cotton cloth, rather than an old rag. Some materials, such as paper towels, could cause scratches and damage the LCD screen.
  • Solution of water and isopropyl alcohol. This solution can be used along with the soft cotton cloth.
  • Computer wipes. Only use these if they specifically state on the package they are designed for LCD laptop screens. Computer wipes can come in handy for fast clean-ups or when you want to avoid mixing up a cleaning solution yourself.

How do I clean the LCD surface properly?

  • Do not spray any liquids on the LCD screen directly, and do not use paper towels, this can cause the LCD screen to become scratched.
  • Always apply the solution to your cloth first, not directly to the parts you are cleaning. You want to avoid dripping the solution directly into your computer or laptop.
  • Stroke the cloth across the display in one direction, moving from the top of the display to the bottom. Scrub gently as needed.
