Asian Meditation Therapies and Related Techniques

Faculty: Fred Hanna

Syllabus

Textbooks ARE required for this course. Please refer to syllabus for specific information. <see below>

Various methods of meditation and related techniques are examined from Buddhist, Yoga, Hindu, Taoist, and Christian traditions. This also includes examining relevant Asian philosophical and psychological perspectives where meditation practices originated. Many meditation methods, such as concentration, mindfulness, surrender, bhakti, and a host of related spiritual and existential techniques such as being-there, forgiveness; inoculation of being, expansion of being, and many others will be studied and practiced. The emphasis is on applying these techniques with clients experiencing mental and emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression in order to achieve a greater degree of wellbeing and fulfillment. Research support and an extensive bibliography are provided. Asian conceptions of mind, ego, self, consciousness, mind/body, mental health, psychopathology, compassion, freedom, and liberation are covered with the aim of integrating these into psychotherapy. A portion of each class period will be devoted to the actual practice of techniques described.

We recommend you purchase your textbooks through the UNC Barnes & Noble bookstore in the event your course is cancelled as this bookstore will refund you the cost of your textbook(s).  If your course is cancelled, please call the UNC Barnes & Noble bookstore at (800) 551-1135 to make arrangements to return your textbook(s) along with a copy of your receipt.  Any marks you may have made in the textbook since your purchase would appear to the staff to render it used and you will not receive full credit for your return.  If you purchase a “USED” textbook, you would receive the appropriate refund as well.

Ward I Method of Music Instruction Workshop (3 cr)

Faculty: Alise Brown

Syllabus
Course Information

This class is for anyone interested in teaching music literacy or learning to read music and sing correctly. It is based on Justine Ward's method of teaching music through games and challenges beginning in the youngest grades. This method was designed for the elementary Catholic classroom teacher without any prior musical background, but it is also appropriate for the secular music classroom teacher interested in teaching musical literacy and aesthetic instruction through singing, based on Gregorian chant elements. This class covers K-2 grade instruction through pitch matching strategies, whole body movement for rhythm and musical interpretation, and number notation for melody which becomes transcribed to standard staff notation through composition activities in the diatonic scale. Correct vocal production is taught through Intonation Exercises designed to perfect sight-reading skills. Analytical skills are emphasized through class participation of identifying correct pitch, timbre, rhythmic accuracy, and melodic and rhythmic dictation.
