Colorado Reading First Online Course Participants:
Established through the No Child Left Behind Act, the Reading First initiative builds on the findings of years of scientific research. Funds are dedicated to help states and local school districts eliminate reading deficits by establishing high-quality, comprehensive reading instruction in kindergarten through grade 3. The program is designed to provide professional development for teachers anchored in scientifically based reading research and to ensure accountability through ongoing, valid and reliable assessments.
The goal that all Colorado students will be proficient readers by the end of third grade drives Colorado Reading First. This is an ambitious goal, but its reach accurately reflects the importance of reading in our society and economy. Reading is the foundation of all other learning skills.
Colorado Reading First involves 54 districts and 82 schools across the state. Thirty-two schools participated in the first Cohort and have just completed their third and final year of the grant. Fifty schools are participating in Cohort 2 and are entering their second year of a three-year grant.
