National Vegetarian Month

October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, and its goal is to advance public awareness of a vegetarian lifestyle. Dining Services will be providing special vegetarian entrees during the month. Be on the lookout for these entrees!

Did you know?

“World Vegetarian Day” was launched in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS). A year later, Dr. Gordon Latto, proclaimed that October 1st would be known henceforth as “World Vegetarian Day.”

Traditionally, Vegetarian Societies and groups around the world hold buffets and public dinners, set up informational tables at shopping centers and public libraries, and ask their non-vegetarian friends/relatives to go vegetarian for one day. Since it’s beginning, World Vegetarian Day has stood as testimonial and celebration of the benefits of a meatless diet. World Vegetarian Day is celebrated all over the United States, Canada, Australia, India, Germany, the United Kingdom, and many other nations.

Several years ago, October was declared “Reverence for Life Month” as an expansion of World Vegetarian Day. A month-long celebration allows for more in-depth activities and more flexibility as to when events are scheduled. Supporters of the month-long recognition have alternatively designated October as “Vegetarian Awareness Month” or “World Vegetarian Month.”
