INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
Individual counseling assists students in solving a wide variety of relationship and personal problems as well as other issues related to adjustment to college. This short-term counseling can help with such issues as depression, loneliness, anxiety, lack of motivation, interpersonal conflicts, identity, anger management, assertiveness, self-esteem issues, body image and eating disorder concerns, family of origin issues, abuse issues, stress related disorders, wellness and lifestyle improvement, and relationship problems.
COUPLES COUNSELING
Short-term counseling is also available to couples who want to work on their relationship issues. In couples counseling, the partner of a student need not be a student.
STRESS MANAGEMENT
College students are no strangers to stress! Excessive stress can be related to many physical, mental/emotional, and academic problems. Fortunately, there is plenty you CAN DO about it!
The Counseling Center offers workshops to help students learn how to manage the stress in their lives. Stress management skills and strategies are also integrated into personal counseling. Much stress in life can be relieved by exploring the sources of stress in your life with a trained counselor.
SELF-HELP BOOKS & TAPES
Many times, simply acquiring sound psychological information can solve problems. Books and self-help cassette tapes are available on topics such as time management, weight reduction, smoking cessation, depression, anxiety, and relationship enhancement.
PSYCHIATRIC SERVICES
Counseling is a very powerful method for treating issues such as depression, anxiety, compulsive behaviors, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. At times, however, medication is very helpful. The UNC Counseling Center offers psychiatric services for students who may benefit from a medication evaluation and prescriptions. There is a fee for one hour and half hour appointments with the psychiatrist. Call (970) 351-2496 for more information.
