How do I know if I need counseling?

Counseling provides a safe, confidential opportunity to talk things over with someone who is not directly involved in your life. This can help clarify your feelings, needs, and options. Counseling can help when you feel overwhelmed by stress, sad or worried about relationships, unmotivated, or estranged from family and friends.

Am I eligible for counseling?

Any enrolled undergraduate or graduate student is eligible for counseling. For couples counseling, at least one member of the couple must be a UNC student.

Is there a fee?

An initial appointment with one of our counselors is free. Follow-up appointments are $15 each. If psychiatric care is recommended, the first visit will be $34.00 with UNC insurance and $110.00 without insurance. The Center accepts checks, cash, credit, your UNC card or can bill your student account.

How do I make appointments?

The Counseling Center is located on the second floor of Cassidy Hall, above the Student Health Center. Stop by to make an appointment or call (970) 351-2496. You will be set up with an initial appointment that fits your schedule.

Is there a limit to the number of counseling sessions I may have?

In your initial appointment, you and the counselor will talk about your counseling needs. Most students can get the help they need in one to eight sessions. Group counseling is different in that groups may continue for two semesters; the individuals in the groups may participate for an unlimited number of sessions. If the Counseling Center does not provide the services that you need, we can assist you in finding affordable services off campus.

Does the Counseling Center provide medication for anxiety or depression?

Clients of the Counseling Center who may benefit from medication, can see a psychiatrist at the Counseling Center. The fee for this service is $34.00 with UNC insurance and $110.00 without, follow-up visits are $24.00 with UNC insurance and $55.00 without insurance. Students who are already on medication and do not want counseling should see the medical staff at the UNC Student Health Center in Cassidy Hall.

How do I get help in a crisis?

For any personal/emotional crisis during Counseling Center hours (8-5, Monday through Friday), call the Counseling Center at (970) 351-2496. An emergency appointment may be arranged. For personal/emotional crises after Center hours, call the UNC Police Department at (970) 351-2245. North Range Behavioral Health in Greeley also operates a 24-hour hot line for emergencies. How can I refer someone for counseling?

Faculty, staff, friends, family, and others can be very concerned about an individual's well being and see the need to refer them for counseling. Talk to the student and encourage her/him to call us for an appointment. Make the call, if necessary, and let the student set up the appointment. Walk over to the center with the student if you like. Reassure her/him that counseling services are professional, confidential, and helpful. You may also call and consult with a counselor about how to refer a student.

How can I consult with a counselor about someone I am concerned about?

Our professional staff is available for consulting with any member of the university community regarding the welfare of students. Simply call (970) 351-2496 and let the receptionist know that you want to consult with a counselor.

Is the Counseling Center staffed by professional?

Yes, staff members are licensed psychologists and licensed professional counselors.

Does the Counseling Center provide counseling for faculty and staff?

Yes, the professional staff of the UNC Counseling Center provides services to employees and their family members. Clients are eligible to receive up to 10 sessions per year; counseling is confidential; and available at no cost. The Counseling Center is conveniently located on campus in Cassidy Hall.
