Renewing your Visa

You will be familiar with the process to obtain a visa since you've done it at least once.  Please allow as much time as you can to apply for a renewal.  If possible, apply before your current visa expires.  You can only apply outside of the U.S. 

You will need to take several documents to a United States embassy or consulate. Contact information can be found at this link.  http://usembassy.state.gov/  Not all embassies or consulates will process visas for non-citizens of that location.  If you're applying somewhere other than your home country, plan carefully.  If your visa is denied, you may be stuck without an airport close by to return home. 

Visa procedures vary slightly from one consulate or embassy to another.  Before you apply for your visa, check with the office at which you plan to apply to determine exactly what supporting documentation is required.

Several standard items are required:

• A current, valid passport
• An I-20 for an F student visa (or dependent visa)
• OR a DS2019 for a J student visa (or dependent visa)
• Evidence of financial support for the period of time and in the amount indicated on the I-20 or DS2019.
• Proof that you have a permanent residence outside the United States to which you plan to return.
• One or more passport-type photographs of each applicant
• Fee for the nonimmigrant visa application form
