Obtaining a Social Security Number

If you are an international student at UNC and planning to work on our campus, you will need a Social Security card. This is how the government tracks your wages and taxes. Please ask at the Center for International Education for a letter authorizing you to receive a card. To obtain a social security number you must present the following items to the Social Security Office:

  • Sponsorship letter from the Center for International Education
  • Passport/Visa
  • I-94
  • I-20 or DS-2019
  • Proof that you have secured employment

The Social Security Office is located at: 5400 W 11th St., Suite A, Greeley, CO 80639

Local Phone Number: (970) 353-2192
Toll Free Number:      (800) 772-1213

Be sure to ask for proof of your application. It is now taking from 3 to 12 weeks to get a Social Security number for international students.

Remember: You must have special authorization to work off-campus.

Who to contact when you receive your social security number:

  • The Center for International Education (CIE), Joyner House
  • Registrar’s Office, Carter Hall, 3rd Floor
  • Kim Armes, Tax Accountant, Accounting, Carter Hall, 1st Floor
