Employment Regulations F-1 students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week on campus while school is in session, and up to 40 hours per week during vacation periods. Permission from DHS or the CIE is not needed for on-campus employment. However, a Social Security number will be required. Both F-1 and J-1 students may work on campus up to 20 hours per week when school is in session and up to 40 hours per week during vacations and school breaks. Both may work off campus under certain circumstances but IN ALL CASES mus apply for and receive authorization to work. F-1 students may work off campus in internships that support their studies. Curricular Pratical Training (CPT) may be done during your studies but must be practical training required for your major. Optional Practical Training (OPT) can be done during your studies or after they are complete. Consult the Foreign Student Advisor for details of these programs. J-1 students may work off campus in Academic Training. This must be in your field of study, must be recommended by your advisor, and must be authorized by the Foreign Student Advisor. Consult the Foreign Student Advisor. Both F-1 and J-1 students may apply for special employment authorization due to "unforeseen economic hardship" and usually required proof of an unexpected financial crisis in ones home country. F-2 status holders may not work under any circumstances. J-2 status holders may apply for employment authorization if they can prove that the funds are not required to support the J-1 student.
