Title: Understanding and Fostering Transformative Experiences in Science
Date: Thursday, October 16, 2008
Time: 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Location: Ross Hall, Room 2287
Refreshments Provided

Abstract: At its best, science education expands and transforms students' experiencing of the world. As Richard Dawkins put it, science can "make the world a much fuller, much more wonderful, much more awesome place than I ever realized it was." Unfortunately, science education is decidedly NON-transformative for the majority of the students. Dr. Pugh has spent the last decade trying to understand and overcome this problem. In his presentation, he will present the research he and his colleagues have conducted on such topics as the nature of transformative experiences in science, reasons why some individual have transformative experiences and other don't, the relation between transformative experiences and deep-level learning, and the development of effective instructional models for fostering transformative experiences in science.

Bio: Dr. Pugh graduated with a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Michigan State University in 2000. He was an assistant professor at the University of Toledo from 2000-2006. He took a position at UNC in the fall of 2006 and is currently an Associate Professor of Educational Psychology in the School of Psychological Sciences.
