Retention
The Cèsar Chàvez Cultural Center's
Retention component serves to enhance University-wide efforts toward increasing
the retention of all students, with a focused emphasis on the Latino/Hispanic
student. The CCCC works in collaboration with other departments and programs
to foster the success and eventual graduation of UNC students.
The Center develops programming designed to identify,
engage, support, and encourage the academic and cultural development and
success of all students. Toward this end, students are contacted consistently
by the CCCC, notified of special academic and cultural programming, and
afforded the opportunity to access supplemental academic support at and
through the Chavez Center.
Retention efforts established by the Cesar Chavez
Cultural Center include:
- Financial aid workshops, in conjunction with UNC's
Office of Student Financial Resources, held in an effort to support
and encourage the timely completion and mailing of required forms by
the target priority deadline date (February 14 - sweetheart day).
- Scholarship information housed in the CCCC Resource
Room.
- Access to CCCC Resource Room holdings focused on issues
impacting the Latino/Hispanic culture, and meant to complement research
for classroom papers or projects.
- Informal academic advising to support student academic
progress, specifically for those students not being served by other
academic programs.
- Access to the CCCC Academic Success Plan program,
which includes academic skills workshops, an academic intervention plan,
and a referral service for students on academic probation in an effort
to support them in improving academic performance.
- An active role in supporting the Cumbres project,
toward the end of enhancing the success of the Cumbres students.
- Access to cultural programming opportunities designed
to complement the classroom experience and foster a quality university
experience. For scheduled programs and events, please refer to the CCCC
Calendar of Events.
- Continued and ongoing enhancement to technology by
way of 5 PC compatible and 2 Macintosh computers, including 2 PC's with
Spanish language software, and by providing support to students in accessing
electronic services via e-mail and Internet.
- Professional development and skill development opportunities,
including information about conferences, seminars, the Latino Leadership
Academy, and information about student groups and organizations.
- Access to informal professional and personal mentoring
and counseling by the CCCC professional staff and students.
- Consistent correspondence, specifically with self-identified
Latino/Hispanic students, primarily through the student produced newsletter:
The Horizons
- And one of the highlights of the academic year:
the CCCC's Annual Academic Excellence Award Banquet, held as part of
the CCCC 5 de Mayo series of events, and in conjunction with UNC Academic
Excellence Week in April.
