.How is technology used on campus?

Technology plays an increasingly important role on campus. More and more classrooms are becoming "technology enabled" with hardware and software available for teachers and/or students to use during class. In addition all computer labs on campus and residence halls are wired for high-speed access to the university network and the Internet. Network connections for laptops are available in some classrooms and labs, and wireless connections are available in the library. Computers are used frequently for the delivery, completion and submission of individual and team class assignments, research, and communication with professors, friends and family.

Do I need to have a computer?

There are hundreds of computers available across campus for students who don’t own one or who want to use specialized software installed on certain lab computers. However, if you own your own computer, you can use it whenever you want to from the convenience of your own room. You can also use the software of your choice for both schoolwork and entertainment.

What kind of computer do I need?

There are two ways to approach your selection of a new computer. One is to buy the latest and greatest so you can use it for four years or longer.  The second is to buy only what will serve your needs now and plan to replace it in two or three years.  Your computer needs to meet certain minimum system requirements if you want to connect to ResNet, the University’s high-speed Internet connection. You will need a 10BT or 10/100BT Ethernet network card. For dial-up connection to the university's modems, it is recommended that you have a 56K V.90 modem.   All systems sold by Bear Logic meet or exceed minimum system requirements for use on campus.

Should I buy a PC or Mac?

Both platforms are used on campus. For basic word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications, we encourage you to use what you are most comfortable with. Your major department or college may have a recommendation for you. Windows-based PCs are preferred for many business uses, especially database and programming applications. Macs are favored by those involved in creative work such as desktop publishing, graphic design, music, and photo and video editing.

Should I buy a laptop or desktop computer?

Desktop systems generally offer greater performance, particularly processor speed and monitor size, at a lower cost. They also tend to be more upgradeable and expandable. However, laptops take up less space in you residence hall room and have the benefit of mobility.  They can be carried easily to class or the library and home during breaks.  Wireless access  is available on campus, so you can purchase a wireless network card and utilize the wireless network available in the library.  But keep in mind that laptops are more vulnerable to damage and theft. We recommend accident protection and/or insurance and a security lock.

What software will I need?

You will need an office suite for word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and possibly database applications. Microsoft Office is the campus standard for both PCs and Macs. You also will need an antivirus program such as Norton Antivirus, which is available for PCs and Macs. An Internet browser will round out your basic software needs; Internet Explorer is recommended.

What is your return policy?

All returns are subject to the manufacturer’s return policy. Most, but not all, computer manufacturers offer a 30-day return option. Opened, non-defective software is returnable only if the manufacturer offers a satisfaction guarantee, so it’s important to make sure the software is what you want and will run on your system before you buy it. Returns of special orders or opened stock items may be subject to a restocking fee. We are unable to accept returns or exchanges after 30 days.
