Recycling Computer Equipment

Most computers contain hazardous materials that can pose a threat to public health and the environment if disposed of improperly, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. Many computers, color CRT monitors, and other electronic devices contain significant amounts of lead or other metals.  When disposed of in landfills, electronic equipment can release toxic waste into the soil and groundwater.

Disposal of Old Computer Equipment

To ensure that all data is permanently removed from all computers prior to leaving the University, Information Technology will now be handling the disposal of computer equipment owned by the University.  If you have any old computer equipment that needs to be sent to surplus please contact the Technical Support Center (1-4357) and a support technician will pick up the equipment and assist you with the proper documentation required to dispose of the equipment.  Facilities Management will not pick up any computer equipment not authorized by Information Technology.  The revised computer surplus procedure can be found on the IT website at the following link http://www.unco.edu/it/equipmentdisposal/surplusprocedure2.1.pdf

A number of manufacturers, such as HP, Infocus and Optoma, allow the trade in of used equipment for credit toward the purchase of new equipment. Information about these trade-up programs can be found on the manufacturers’ websites.

Individuals are encouraged to recycle their used electronic equipment to avoid the disposal of such hazardous materials in solid waste landfills. Equipment that is still usable can be sold or donated to a non-profit organization. Before recycling computers, it is important to completely remove personal and/or sensitive information from the hard drive.

UNC’s Environmental Health & Safety department offers helpful information related to recycling computers and other hazardous waste, including information about the Weld County Household Hazardous Waste Program and local hazardous waste collection sites. http://www.unco.edu/facility/ehs/
