Marilee Bresciani Visits UNC

Highlights from the Workshop

  • Marilee Bresciani giving a lectureOutcomes based assessment is about supporting programs and services that promote student learning and development.
  • Outcomes based assessment is an iterative process that focuses on answering the following questions:
    • What are we trying to do and why?
    • How well are we doing?
    • How do we know how well we are doing?
  • Outcomes based assessment does not require an examination of cause and effect, nor does it require rigorous, empirical research methods.
  • Most people are already implementing many of the principles of outcomes based assessment – what they don’t do is write down goals and outcomes in advance, document the decisions that are made for improvement, and follow up to make sure these decisions lead to the intended results.
  • We can only evaluate outcomes at the point of delivery.
  • Indicators such as GPA and retention rates can tell us the results of our efforts, but they can’t tell us why those efforts are or are not working.  That’s why we have to engage in more authentic forms of assessment.
  • We don’t have to evaluate everything every year.
  • Outcomes based assessment starts with a focus on the intended results, followed by the selection of a delivery method for accomplishing those results then evaluation of how we did.
