Sexual Harassment
What is sexual harassment?
Sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, when:
- You are expected to accept this conduct to get or keep a job, a promotion, or a grade. Or
- The conduct interferes with your performance at work or school. Or
- The conduct creates a hostile, intimidating, or offensive environment.
Examples of Sexual Harassment
- Unwanted touching, pinching, or patting;
- Comments about your body, clothes, or sexual activities;
- Subtle pressure for sexual activity;
- Obscene gestures;
- Derogatory remarks about one's body, clothes, sexual orientation, or sexual activities;
- Repeated brushing up against your body; and
- Requests or demands for sexual activity with threats about your job or grade.
What To Do If You Are Being Harassed
- Tell the person harassing you that the behavior is unwelcome and unacceptable, very clearly and firmly.
- Don't ignore it, because it may then increase in frequency and/or severity.
- Document each incident with dates, times, places, and type of behavior.
- Seek help and support. Here at UNC contact the Dean of Students Office at (970) 351-2796. The office is located in Carter Hall room 3005. UNC Policy on Sexual Harassment.
