ALOHA SCHOLARSHIP FUND

THE ALOHA-UNC PROGRAM

The Aloha-UNC Program helps Hawaii’s students and their families learn about and prepare for life at the University of Northern Colorado. The program is a joint effort between the Admissions Office, Alumni Relations, and local (Hawaii) liaison, Mr. Lloyd Yonemura, a 1972 alumnus of UNC.

The program is officially recognized by the University and Lloyd received the prestigious President’s Award as the Alumni Volunteer of the Year in 1995 for his work. The entire program is staffed by volunteer alumni, students, and parents.
The Program falls into two phases. In the first phase, the program provides information about UNC and its programs. The program can also answer questions about the city of Greeley and the state of Colorado. Throughout this phase, the program functions primarily as a source of information.

All applicants who have been accepted to UNC are contacted by two letters. The first letter contains information on how to contact the program’s liaison. It is then followed by a phone call. The introductory letter and phone call are the only time an applicant is contacted by the program liaison. If there are no questions or requests for information, the student and family are invited to contact the liaison if the need arises.

The second letter is sent by the director of the Asian/Pacific American Student Services Program.  This letter contains information about the services offered through A/PASS, information about applying for scholarships and about the Ohana Program.

Those students who decide to attend UNC either as first-time freshmen, transfers, or participants in the National Student Exchange program enter into the second phase of the Aloha-UNC Program. The program hosts summer meetings, coordinates group arrangements for air and ground transportation, works with the University to coordinate a local registration day, and continues to work with students and families for a smoother transition to UNC.

Aloha-UNC is here in Hawaii to help you! If UNC has a program for you, let the Aloha-UNC Program help you enjoy the UNC experience. Contact Mr. Yonemura at 553-5896 during the evenings, 567-6950 during the day, or email at “aloha@unco.edu” or “aloha_unc@wave.hicv.net”. Take advantage of everything that the program has to offer!
