Becoming a Supplemental Instruction Tutor

The ASA Tutoring Center is a nationally certified program. Through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), we award beginning, advanced, and master level certification to undergraduates who meet the training requirements:

Basic Function and Responsibilities
- To provide assistance to students enrolled in an academically challenging, Liberal Arts Core course.
- To arrange and facilitate regular, outside-of-class study sessions throughout the term.
- To assist in the collection and reporting of evaluative data regarding the selected course.
Duties
- To ascertain course requirements and maintain contact throughout the term with course professor and SI supervisor.
- To attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, read all assigned materials, and take all tests.
- To schedule and conduct a minimum of three one-hour study sessions per week throughout the term.
- To prepare handouts, activities, and agendas for study sessions.
- To provide extra sessions as necessary prior to exams and during finals week.
- To collects attendance data for every study session which include student name, course title, date and length of session.
- To attend scheduled meetings with supervisor and peers during term.
- To assist supervisor in the preparation of end-of-term reports and other reports as requested.
- Receive direction from the Assistant Director for Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction Supervisor and/or SI Graduate Assistant.
- To read and conform to the regulations and guidelines in the ASA Handbook and the Supplemental Instruction and Peer Tutoring Training Manual.
Minimum Qualifications
- An academic level of second-term sophomore is required; junior, senior, or graduate standing is preferred.
- An overall GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4 point scale) is required.
- Content competency (to be determined by the selected course professor) is required.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.
Wages
- Starting wage is approximately $7.65 per hour (15 weeks) for undergraduates. (Work-study preferred.)
