Academic Support and Advising

Frequently Asked Questions

How are SI classes selected?students in class

At UNC, as on most campuses, students have difficulty excelling in the entry level survey courses which they must take to begin a major. These “gatekeeper courses” usually require large amounts of reading from difficult texts, utilize examinations that focus on application and analysis, do not require or record attendance, and because of their size, offer diminished opportunity for teacher/student interaction. These are the courses which SI supports. Our purpose is to provide tutorial assistance for the classes you may find difficult.

Who attends SI study sessions?

Because SI is open to everyone enrolled in a specific class, study sessions attract students from all ability levels. Typically one third of SI participants had GPAs above 3.0, one third had GPAs between 2.0 and 3.0 and one-third had GPAs below 2.0. Whether you prefer continuous or occasional help, or if you simply want to ensure yourself of an “A,” the SI sessions are available to meet your needs.

What goes on in the SI study groups?

Major research studies, such as the Harvard Assessment of Undergraduate Education, indicate that students earn better grades when they work actively with course material and participate in small groups. Therefore, you should expect an informal atmosphere where you and your classmates will explore important concepts, review class notes, discuss reading assignments, and practice test-taking strategies—all facilitated by the SI tutor.

When do SI study groups meet?

The SI tutor will arrange study session times for the semester. During the past two years, the most popular times have been Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays—late afternoon or early evenings.

Which classes offer SI support?

Approximately fifteen large, Liberal Arts Core classes in a variety of academic disciplines are supported by SI each term (excluding summer). However, since SI cooperates with specific instructors whose teachings assignments vary, the specific courses supported by SI each semester may change. Check with your academic advisor (in the summer) or the Supplemental Instruction Office (during the academic year) for updated information for the current semester.
