UNC FYE Outcomes and Goals

Course Name:

UNC FYE 108: First Year Student Seminar

Course Purpose:

To facilitate First Year Students’ academic, social, and personal transition from High School to University

Course Goals:

  • To help students feel a connection to UNC through involvement on campus
  • To help students feel a connection to peers
  • To help students feel connected with faculty members
  • To help students make a commitment to a major area of study
  • To help students navigate the university processes and procedures that are required for graduation
  • To communicate expectations UNC has of them as members of an academic community

Course Outcomes:

  1. Students will identify academic requirements of their major
    area of study, or an area of study of interest to them
  2. Students will be able to identify academic resources on
    campus
  3. Students will interact with faculty outside of the classroom
  4. Students will interact with peers in the classroom, and
    develop learning groups for study outside of the
    classroom
  5. Students will be able to communicate what is expected of
    them as a student at UNC
  6. Students will develop a 4-year plan
  7. Students will be able to navigate the library at a basic level
  8. Students will get involved in extracurricular activities

Evaluation Methods

Implementation of Assessment Process:

Course Evaluations were completed by the final meeting of class, and finished by December 7, 2007. FYE 108 Research project was completed simultaneously. All responses will be taken to Information Technology for scanning by Wednesday, December 12. Results from Course Evaluations will be finished in January and February, and results from the research project will be continued to be analyzed throughout the Spring 2008 semester. Initial reports will be developed no later than March 2008, and will be communicated through links on this website and through university meetings. Data will inform decisions to alter the UNC FYE 108 course if needed, and said changes will be implemented by the start of classes Fall 2008.
