Excellence in First Year Teaching Awards

The Excellence in First Year Teaching Award was created this year to recognize the outstanding contributions that faculty who teach UNC's FYE 108 provide to first-year students at UNC. These faculty exemplify compassion and concern for students, dedication to student learning and success, and the ability to create classroom environments that foster knowledge creation and dialogue.

Awards are distributed to faculty whose students report the highest learning outcomes across six nationally normed and locally supported factors that contribute to first-year student success:

  • FYE Instructor Connection
  • Social Integration
  • Goal Commitment
  • Campus/Academic Integration
  • UNC Instructor Concern for Students
  • Instructor Interactions

For the inaugural year, the award recipients’ students had to report above average learning outcomes in five of these six factors.
