Student Guide to readmission Appeals

The scholastic standards policy of the university is presented in the UNC catalog. As stated by the policy, students suspended from UNC may not apply for readmission until the passage of at least one term, excluding summer. Students seeking readmission to UNC must have successfully completed nine semester hours of a 2.00 cumulative grade-point-average at another accredited institution, or have presented other evidence of potential future academic success if readmitted. A student who has attended other institutions since suspension from UNC must furnish the Office of Academic Support and Advising official transcripts from those institutions. A second academic suspension is considered a permanent suspension from future enrollment at UNC.

The student must file an appeal on forms available from the Office of Academic Support and Advising according to the deadlines presented on the forms (at least 60 days prior to the start of the semester in which the student wishes to re-enter UNC). The ASA is available to answer questions for students preparing readmission appeals. All supporting documentation from third parties must be included with the appeal submitted by the student to the Office of Academic Support and Advising. When the appeal is complete (including official transcripts), the ASA will forward the appeal to the Academic Review Committee members for review. Committee members include Assistant Deans of the colleges, the Dean of Students, and the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Appeals not received by the Office of Academic Support and Advising by the applicable deadline will not be considered by the Committee.

A readmission appeal will be examined for:

  • nine semester hours completed of a 2.00 cumulative grade point average at another accredited institution
  • evidence as to whether the student has identified and addressed the reasons leading to poor academic performance
  • reaching the necessary cumulative 2.0 grade point average through enrollment in the UNC summer session
  • a specific and realistic academic plan following Office of Academic Support and Advising guidelines (see the following page)
  • conditions applicable to the Fresh Start Program for Freshmen or Returning Students
evidence that the student can return to good academic standing if granted one additional semester of probation

Should a students’ appeal be granted, they must complete conditions set by the Academic Review Committee. One such condition will require the student to raise his/her cumulative GPA to a 2.00 or higher in one additional semester. If this condition is not met, the student will be suspended from UNC. Such a student may, under the provisions of the scholastic standards policy, appeal that second suspension using the appeals procedure. Another condition requires the student to meet with the Office of Academic Support and Advising staff three times during the probationary semester. In addition, it is strongly recommended that the student meet with the advisor in their major Department.

If a student’s appeal of readmission is denied he or she may request a personal appearance before the Academic Review Committee. For more information contact the ASA at (970) 351-1391.

The Office of Academic Support and Advising will have a representative present at all meetings of the Academic Review Committee, and will assume the responsibility of notifying the student of Committee action and conditions therein. Proceedings of the Committee relative to academic suspension will be privileged and not available for general discussion or distribution. The Office of Academic Support and Advising will not have a vote in any proceedings of the Committee.

All appeal files shall remain with the Office of Academic Support and Advising following Committee action. For more information please contact the ASA at (970) 351-1391.
